(PATHS)

Improving the health status of poor communities lies at the heart
of PATHS, HLSP's biggest assignment to date.
This £39 million implementation programme funded by DFID aims to
advance Nigerian health systems at a national level and in several
states by improving partnerships, local ownership and responses
from existing health services.
The PATHS project focuses on five priority health conditions:
- Malaria
- TB
- Reproductive health and safe motherhood
- Sexually transmitted infections
- Common childhood illnesses
Strengthening government stewardship in health policy planning and
financing, and improving public health sector management are key
outputs. So too are better quality preventative and curative
services plus greater consumer awareness of entitlement to
healthcare and responsibility for maintaining good health.
To support these outputs, HLSP is leading a consortium comprising
Grid Consulting of Nigeria, Johns Hopkins University, Health
Partners International and Liverpool Associates in Tropical
Health.
PATHS builds strong Nigerian ownership through stakeholder
participation. The consortium's role therefore centres on high
levels of technical assistance with close involvement by Nigerian
partners throughout the implementation phase, due to finish in
2007.
