Ceará State Health Support Project, Brazil

Addressing a number of problems faced by the public health system in Ceará State, this project placed particular emphasis on: redefining the role of the State in health care following decentralisation; inequitable and inefficient use of resources and how to improve the health status of poor people in one of the poorest regions of Brazil.

To engage with these issues, HLSP is supporting the State Public Health System in Ceará to help it to respond to the needs of poorer groups and use resources more efficiently. To achieve this, some of the following outputs have been defined:
  • establishing improved and equitable access to a comprehensive range of quality and cost-effective health services
  • enabling the School of Public Health to contribute to the implementation of better and more participatory policy and practice
  • encouraging civil society involvement in the implementation of improved health policy and practice
